CLUB290 is a group show of flatmates that looks at the way we organise ourselves as a young creative community. Looking specifically at one central Te Whanganui-a-Tara flat, we have brought artists who currently or recently have lived together. The practices of those involved are varied and diverse but tend toward centring brown and/or queer perspectives, which in turn reflects the values we hold when navigating broader art or social spaces. Converted from an old printing shop, the flat has a large open living area unusual for the city at price-points accessible to younger people. As such, it has served a key role in supporting us and our networks, often as a studio, project space, and live music venue for fundraisers—the flat thus becoming CLUB290. Geared towards the playful and irreverent, the exhibition uses proximity to explore how we negotiate opportunity, collaboration and the support needed to get by as artists.
